Destination guide
In Astana, the Ishim River slides between older low-rise blocks and the glass of the new government quarter. Along the river, quiet parks, small cafes, and solid Soviet apartment blocks give this side of Astana a more everyday feeling. In winter wind and deep cold make long walks across the city hard, and street life moves indoors into malls and teahouses. The city center has wide boulevards, towers, and Khan Shatyr, a tent that looks ready for a space picnic. Monuments, grand mosques, and Expo 2017 pavilions stand widely spaced, each landmark sitting alone on broad ground. From the top of Baiterek Tower, a glass ball above the city, straight avenues run into flat grassland surrounding Astana.

At a glance
Calm, formal, and a little distant, Astana mixes big-planned capital energy with quiet cafés, malls, Soviet blocks, and lots of indoor life.
Plan 2 to 4 nights, enough for the main landmarks, river walks, and a feel for the city's unusual character.
Skip it for old streets, easy walking, or backpacker energy. Also skip winter if serious cold, wind, and long outdoor waits sound miserable.
