Country guide
Independent travel in Sri Lanka often means using buses and trains between fishing communities, religious centers, and hill stations. Long shores line the island, where palm groves and lagoons shape work, play, and views. In the upland interior, tea estates cover slopes, and cool air surrounds small towns with busy markets and temples. Across the dry northern plains, ancient stone ruins and man-made lakes stand near fields where farmers grow paddy. In the commercial capital Colombo, office towers and old warehouses mix with rice and curry, hoppers, and fresh king coconut. Because distances are short, people move in a day from tuk-tuk traffic to quiet lanes between farming villages.

Sri Lanka feels green, relaxed, and social, with easy backpacker energy in surf towns, local life close by, and touristy pockets in Ella.
December to February works best for the south and west, July to September suits the east, and October to November is mixed.
Trains are scenic but slow and sell out, buses are cheapest, and PickMe is best for short rides, with Uber mainly in Colombo.
