Destination guide
Sigiriya stands as an orange rock above the flat jungle, where stone stairways climb toward an ancient hilltop fortress. The walk begins through water gardens, with straight pools and low walls in lines under the rock face. Higher up, broken palace walls and old reservoirs on the top show how a royal city once lived here. Two massive stone lion paws mark the final stairway, and many travelers pause for a quick, slightly silly photo. In the middle of the day shade is rare on the upper steps, and long sections have no cover. On a sheltered rock wall near the top, Sigiriya frescoes show graceful figures, colors still clear after centuries.

At a glance
Calm and rural, built around early starts, rock climbs, rice and curry lunches, quiet roads, and sleepy evenings with little nightlife.
2 to 3 nights is enough for the main climbs, slow mornings, and a relaxed base in the Cultural Triangle.
Skip if stairs, heat, and quiet nights sound painful, or if one photo stop feels too expensive for the effort involved.
