Destination guide
Nuwara Eliya spreads out around dark-blue Lake Gregory in Sri Lanka’s central tea hills. The cool climate is a clear change from the island’s heat and keeps long walks comfortable. Low tea bushes cover the hills around town. Narrow paths run between them toward quiet viewpoints and small waterfalls. The town’s small size and walkable slopes give it a slow, gentle pace that suits unplanned days on foot. Nuwara Eliya is also a common base for trips into Horton Plains National Park, with open grassland and patches of cloud forest. Thick mist is frequent there and can hide the distant views from the edges of the plateau. At World’s End cliff in Horton Plains, you stand near the drop while white clouds slide slowly through the valley below.

Give it 1 to 2 nights, enough for town, tea hills, and an early Horton Plains start.
Skip it on a rushed route, or if cold evenings, slow hill travel, nightlife, and beach weather sound like a bad trade.
