Destination guide
Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka’s east coast centers on Main Point and its curved sandy bay. Long waves peel here along the main beach. The point and nearby beach breaks give beginners gentle waves and stronger surfers faster rides. Between surf sessions, the village has a slow rhythm with simple cafes and surfboard shacks along the main street. From town, colourful tuk-tuks rattle to spots like Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm with quieter waves. Near town, Pottuvil Lagoon is a wide lagoon where wild elephants or crocodiles sometimes appear at the water’s edge. On a small wooden boat here, you glide slowly past mangroves while birds call above the water.

Slow mornings, sandy feet, cheap breakfasts, and sunset meetups set the tone. In season it turns social, loud, and a little repetitive.
3 to 5 nights works well, enough for surf sessions, one lagoon trip, and a lazy day between beach spots.
Skip it if surf crowds, beach parties, heat, and sand everywhere sound annoying, or if you are coming off-season for food, nightlife, and choices.
