Destination guide
White-sand beaches ring the deep natural harbour of Trincomalee. On one side sit the busy town streets, on the other lie quiet strips of sand and palms. Above the sea, Koneswaram Temple stands on Swami Rock, with bell sounds mixing with wind and waves. Inside Fort Frederick, monkeys sometimes sit on the walls like small, furry guards under the old trees. North of town, Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches offer warm shallow water and simple beach cafés with slow, easy rhythms. Off Nilaveli, boats carry small groups over clear, pale-blue water to nearby Pigeon Island National Park. In Pigeon Island National Park, coral begins just off the tiny beach, where small reef sharks often circle nearby.

At a glance
Slow, warm, and mellow, with swimming, naps, beach bars in Uppuveli, quieter Nilaveli days, and early nights instead of big parties or action.
Plan 2 to 4 nights, enough for beaches, a boat day, and lazy time without wasting transfers.
Skip it in wet months, or if the trip needs nightlife, surf, short transfers, or lots of cafés close together. Nilaveli can feel inconvenient.
