Country guide
Vietnam stretches between crowded industrial belts near its long shoreline and quieter upland regions where forested hills surround many towns. Low northern plains support rice farming, central highlands hold coffee plantations, and the southern delta spreads into canals and small islands. Major cities combine government offices and narrow dwellings with tree-lined boulevards plus new glass towers beside streams of scooters. Street vendors prepare noodle soup and iced coffee with herbs, while markets display fish and tropical fruit beside sacks of grain. Along provincial roads, buses and cargo trucks travel with motorbikes and bicycles, linking factory zones with wooden houses raised above water and flooded fields.

Vietnam feels fast, noisy, social, and full of energy in cities, then turns calm in the countryside, with big regional differences and a quicker pace.
March to April is best for a full-country trip, while October to early December can work, but central Vietnam gets very wet.
Grab is best in cities, buses are cheap and easy between stops, and trains are slower but more comfortable for long routes.
