Destination guide
Cao Bang holds Ban Gioc Waterfall among limestone peaks on the border with China. Here rivers cut through the karst and drop over a line of low cliffs to form the falls. At Ban Gioc, travelers watch water fall into a turquoise pool and drift on bamboo rafts below the falls. Nearby Nguom Ngao Cave stretches under the hills with stalagmites and cool air after the rice fields outside. In the north, Pac Bo marks the place where Ho Chi Minh lived in a cave beside a stream. The winding mountain roads and views over terraced valleys mean travel here is slow. Near Ban Gioc, travelers sleep in Khuoi Ky village in stone houses beside a stream and rice plots.

Days here start early, end with homestay dinners, and spend the middle on winding roads, village stops, and long looks over green valleys.
Plan 3 to 5 nights, enough for Ban Gioc, Pac Bo, Nguom Ngao, and some slow road time.
Skip if you only have a day or two, want bars and fast transport, or feel uneasy on long, rough mountain roads.
