Destination guide
Bicycles roll slowly along narrow paths between rice fields and wooden stilt houses, sometimes with a big basket of vegetables wobbling behind. Mai Chau is a valley in Hoa Binh province, where Thai villages sit close to rice terraces and low green hills. Traditional stilt houses offer simple homestays, with mattresses on the polished wooden floor and mosquito nets around each sleeping space. From these villages, travelers walk or cycle through the fields, passing water buffalo and hearing small birds calling across the quiet valley. Local women weave bright textiles under the houses on simple wooden looms. During cultural shows, people sit on bamboo floors while local Thai dancers move to drum and gong music inside the wide wooden house.

One to two nights is enough for cycling, a village walk, a homestay night, and a break from Hanoi.
Skip it for big hikes, nightlife, or a fast Hanoi side trip, and avoid July to August if mud ruins the mood.
