Destination guide
Travelers walk into the old prison museum and meet Con Dao's history in stone walls and courtyards. For many years, the islands held a French and South Vietnamese jail, and Vietnamese still visit to remember prisoners. Outside town, forested hills rise above the coast. Quiet roads cross Con Dao National Park to bays and viewpoints. Long beaches such as Dam Trau have soft sand, clear water, and simple food stalls under the trees. Dive shops run trips to nearby reefs where fish move over coral in calm water. Most activity here is slow and quiet, between historic sites and time outside in the park or on the beach. On nearby Bay Canh Island, small groups sit with rangers on the beach as green turtles sometimes nest in the sand.
