Fast, noisy, smoky, and alive, then suddenly soft by the lake or in a quiet cafe, once the Old Quarter stops shouting.

Destination guide
In northern Vietnam, tight streets of the Old Quarter run close to the water of Hoan Kiem Lake. Hanoi has constant motorbike noise as well as shady lakeside paths and coffee shops, so different streets can be busy or calm. You wander narrow lanes where power lines hang low, signs crowd together, and small markets fill the air with fruit smells. On tiny plastic stools, you eat hot pho or smoky bun cha as scooters slide just a few steps from your knees. Old street cafes and bia hoi corners are places for long breaks, which suits the city's mix of energy and patience. Along narrow Train Street, trains run so close to balconies that every window is clearly visible.

At a glance
Fast, noisy, smoky, and alive, then suddenly soft by the lake or in a quiet cafe, once the Old Quarter stops shouting.
Give Hanoi 2 to 4 nights, enough for food streets, lake time, and a day to settle into the traffic rhythm.
Skip it in hot wet summer, or if noise, smog, hard road crossings, and dense urban mess drain the fun from cities.
