Country guide
Morning streets in Jakarta fill with motorbikes, food carts, and workers moving between glass towers and small warung stalls. Across thousands of islands, Indonesia stretches from Sumatra’s rainforests and plantations to Java’s crowded cities and volcano-lined highlands. Further east, Bali and nearby islands include rice terraces, Hindu temples, and black-sand beaches. In many towns, calls to prayer from mosques and church bells are heard together with gamelan music from community halls. Ferries, small wooden boats, and budget airlines connect islands where Bahasa Indonesia links hundreds of local languages. Visitors who enjoy street food, humid tropical nature, and long island journeys often choose Indonesia for repeated, slow trips.

Bali and the Gilis feel easy and social, but many islands are quieter, more local, and slower, great for patient backpackers who like variety.
April to June and September to October usually give the best mix of dry weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds, except Raja Ampat.
Use Grab or Gojek in cities, Blue Bird in Jakarta, trains on Java, ferries for short hops, and flights when distances get big.
