Destination guide
On the cool Bukittinggi plateau, steep green valleys cut between volcanoes and small villages sit on the ridges. From these highlands, West Sumatra opens routes to rice terraces, waterfalls, and canyon walls like those at Harau Valley. Trekking paths lead past bright paddies and sheer rock faces, and simple homestays often stand just a short walk away. Days here often feel slow, as most exploring happens on foot or by motorbike. Heavy rain can make some trails muddy and narrow bridges slippery. Farther west, the Mentawai Islands offer long, powerful waves and small jungle villages that surfers and other curious wanderers share with local boats. In the evening, you might sit beside Lake Maninjau, watch fishing lamps appear on the dark water, and hear soft splashes from wooden jetties.

Low-key, local, and a bit rough, with hill towns, homestays, rice fields, motorbike days, and quiet evenings instead of hostel parties.
Plan 4 to 7 nights, enough for Bukittinggi, Harau Valley, lake time, and Mentawai only if boats and weather line up.
Skip it on a tight schedule, in November to March, or if you want nightlife, easy transport, steady internet, and zero weather drama.
