Destination guide
In the East Java volcanoes, you walk across the wide sand plain below Mount Bromo. Here a smoking cone rises from a flat bed of ash, and a Hindu temple stands near its base. Low ridges around the crater give wide views of Bromo, its ash plain, and the green hills beyond. Farther east, Kawah Ijen offers a different climb, with a steep path leading up to another active crater. At the top, a blue-green acid lake fills the crater while sulfur miners work beside the vents. The sulfur smell is strong here, like standing over a huge box of just-lit matches. From the rim, you watch miners carry sulfur blocks past the smoking vents along the narrow path above the crater lake.

This route feels sleepy, cold, and single-minded, cheap eats in Malang, quiet dawn focus in Cemoro Lawang, then practical Banyuwangi for one more climb.
Plan 4 to 6 nights, enough for Malang, Bromo, Banyuwangi, and buffer time for long transfers and weather.
Skip if midnight alarms, sulfur fumes, cold mornings, and long van rides sound awful. Short on time, choose one volcano instead of rushing both.
