Destination guide
Walk into a hilltop village where tall thatched roofs rise above huge stone graves. Sumba keeps some of Indonesia's most traditional Marapu villages and megalithic tombs. Paths pass water buffalo, drying corn, and women weaving bright ikat cloth on simple wooden looms. Many roads are rough, so travel across the island can be slow but also feels very open and wild. Wide empty beaches stretch for kilometers, with strong surf, pale sand, and almost no buildings in sight. Small warungs and markets give basic food and a chance to see daily island life, not a show for travelers. At Walakiri Beach, travelers often walk out at low tide between thin mangrove trees and watch their reflections in the very shallow water.

Give Sumba 4 to 7 nights, less feels rushed once slow roads and long beach or village days start stacking up.
Skip it on a short budget trip, or if you want easy scooters, nightlife, strong internet, or smooth planning. Rainy months add pain.
