Destination guide
Soft engine noise from wooden boats rolls across a blue bay as dive groups sort tanks. Between forested limestone islets and the larger islands of Raja Ampat, reefs drop from bright shallows into deep clear water. Coral walls carry swaying fans, tiny nudibranchs, and clouds of fish in almost silly numbers. Strong currents can limit where beginners enter the water, but make many channels rich with life. Surface intervals often pass on simple jetties or village beaches where children jump laughing into the sea. Days take an easy rhythm, with early dives, long pauses, and quiet starry nights above dark water. In places like Manta Sandy, huge rays circle cleaning stations while smaller reef fish pick at their wings.

Remote, early-to-bed, and social in a low-key way, especially on Kri, where boat chats, shared meals, and sunset hangs replace any real nightlife.
Plan 5 to 8 nights, enough for ferry logistics, boat transfers, and several good dive or snorkel days.
Skip if cheap comfort, strong Wi-Fi, easy food choices, or land activities are important. Also skip in rougher June to September if boats stress you.
