Destination guide
Wooden boats slide along brown water inside the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, a wide maze of rivers and canals. This maze lets traders, farmers, and school children move mainly by water. Small boat trips take travelers through narrow channels close to palm trees, stilt houses, and nets drying in the sun. Morning floating markets show river trade at work, with sellers calling out from boats loaded with fruit and vegetables. Away from the main waterways, quiet paths across rice fields allow slow days of cycling or walking between small villages. Boat journeys and rural roads create a slower pace here than in Vietnam’s busy cities. Simple riverside homestays let travelers share home-cooked Mekong fish and tropical fruit while water laps just below the wooden floor.
