Destination guide
The soft clang of temple bells carries along a dusty street as you pass bicycles and palmyra palms. Between wide lagoons and the tip of northern Sri Lanka, Jaffna has quiet streets, low houses, and bright Hindu gopurams. Bicycles make it easy to move between the old Dutch fort, the rebuilt public library, and small markets full of fruit and the odd snack. The town’s slow rhythm, especially after the busier south, makes long stays feel easy and unhurried. Midday heat can be strong, so most life shifts into the shade and lanes feel almost empty. At Nallur Kandaswamy temple, you walk the outer corridor barefoot, feeling the smooth stone under your feet and the steady rhythm of drums.

At a glance
Strongly Tamil and low-key, Jaffna is more about markets, temple streets, and long chats over food than hostel nights or big-ticket sights.
Stay 2 to 4 nights, enough for the town, good meals, temple time, and a couple of peninsula or island day trips.
Skip it if the trip needs nightlife, beach bars, or fast highlights, or if heat, quiet evenings, and simple logistics sound draining.
