Destination guide
In Song-Kul, wide green pastures ring a calm blue lake high on a treeless plateau. This open land is ideal for horse treks between simple yurt camps of seasonal herding families. Travelers hike gentle hills and watch clouds move across huge skies above the lake. With only yurts and livestock around, the area stays quiet most of the day. Long empty hours between rides or walks give the place a slow, simple rhythm. Cold nights above 3000 meters keep yurt interiors chilly after the stove goes out. Around the lake, herders move sheep, horses, and shaggy yaks across the grass during the short summer season. Herder families sometimes invite travelers into their yurts to share fresh kymyz from mares grazing outside.

A true switch-off stop, slow days of tea, short walks, horse rides, shared dinners, and huge grassland silence, with a small friendly social feel.
Stay 1 to 2 nights, enough for a ride or walk, one quiet evening, and the high-altitude yurt camp experience.
Skip if cold nights, shared toilets, bad roads, altitude, or slow remote travel sound miserable, or if quiet alone cannot carry a trip.
