Belize uses the Belize dollar, fixed at BZ$2 to US$1, so it is easy to calculate prices. US dollars are accepted in many places, but change often comes back in BZD. Small businesses still often want cash. ATMs usually give only BZD, and foreign card fees can become expensive. Because of that, one larger withdrawal is usually better than many small ones. Carry two cards if you can. Say no to any conversion offer at the ATM or card machine. Cards work in hotels and many tourist restaurants, but buses, taxis, small eateries, and rural stops still mostly need cash.

Belize is quite different by region. The north is flatter and drier. Rain starts later there, with about 60 inches a year. The south, especially Toledo and the Maya Mountains, is much wetter. It can get up to about 160 inches. Across the country, the dry season is usually from late February to May. The rainy season is from June to November. Hurricane risk is highest in September and October. The coast and cayes are hot and humid all year, usually around 24°C to 31°C. Inland rain can quickly make roads, caves, and trails muddy and hard to use.

The main serious risk is crime in some parts of Belize City. This is especially true on the Southside, south of Haulover Creek Canal toward Fabers Road. For most backpackers, Belize City is better for passing through than staying. Other common problems are taxi drivers charging too much, getting too little change, ATM skimming, and random border "helpers" selling bad advice. Agree on the fare before you get in. Check which currency they mean. Use official transport counters. Do not drive between cities after dark. Keep valuables out of sight on buses, at terminals, and near banks or ATMs.

Budget travel on the mainland depends on local buses. They are cheap, but very slow. Highway fares are capped at BZ$0.18 per mile for regular buses and BZ$0.20 per mile for express. You usually pay onboard. For the cayes, San Pedro Belize Express and Caribbean Sprinter are the main water taxi operators. Domestic flights with Tropic Air and Maya Island Air save a lot of time, but prices rise fast. Taxis usually do not use meters, so agree on the fare first. The best way to book is to check the operator site, then confirm by WhatsApp or at the terminal.

Mosquitoes are the main health problem for travelers. Dengue, chikungunya, and Zika are all risks and should be taken seriously. Use repellent, especially at dusk. Cover bites or cuts well, because wound infections and screwworm risk are also possible. Your routine vaccines should be up to date, and Hep A is often recommended. Bottled or treated water is safer. Medical care is limited for serious problems, and major cases may need evacuation. Because of that, travel insurance with evacuation cover is worth the money here. Night driving is also a bad idea if you want an easy, uneventful trip.

Belize has two main mobile companies, Digi and Smart. Digi prepaid SIMs start at BZ$22.50. They include 1GB plus credit. Data packs go from BZ$1 for 130MB up to BZ$45 for 7.5GB over 30 days. Smart sells small prepaid bundles from BZ$1.25 and larger packs up to BZ$160. It also offers a tourist eSIM with unlimited data for BZ$45 over 10 days. Coverage is strongest in Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, San Ignacio, Placencia, Dangriga, Corozal, and Punta Gorda. Buy one at a DigiStore or Smart outlet. Then top up by app, USSD, or local agents.

Belize is easy for language. English is the official language, so hostels, hotels, tours, government offices, and most transport are simple to use. In daily life, people often speak Kriol. Spanish is also common, especially near borders and in some rural areas. Garifuna and Maya languages are used in certain communities. English works well in almost every place a backpacker usually needs. But in markets and on local buses, people may switch quickly between English, Kriol, and Spanish.

Belize moves at a relaxed pace, sometimes called Belizean time, so transport and meetups may run a little late. Patience works better than pressure. People usually like a greeting before business, and the social style is friendly without being pushy. Tipping is normal. In restaurants, around 10% to 15% is common. People also often tip in taxis or on tours if a service charge is not already included. Bargaining is uncommon outside street markets and can seem rude. Clothes are fairly conservative in towns and churches. Beachwear should stay on the beach, not in the supermarket line.

Food in Belize is influenced by Caribbean, Creole, Garifuna, and Maya cooking. Eat local when you can, because tourist menus become expensive quickly. Good budget basics are street food and simple local meals, often around BZ$4 to BZ$12. A Belikin beer in bars is commonly about BZ$8 to BZ$12. Look for rice and beans with stew chicken, fry jacks for breakfast, fresh seafood on the coast, and more coconut-based cooking in Garifuna areas. Cash is useful at smaller places. The cheapest meals are often in places with plastic chairs and almost no interest in decor.
