Bolivia uses the boliviano, BOB or Bs, and it is still one of the cheaper countries in South America. Cash is most important for markets, local food, buses, taxis, and many hostels. Cards work in larger hotels, some agencies, and nicer restaurants, but do not rely on them too much. ATMs are common in cities and less common in small towns. Cash shortages or low limits can also be a problem. Banco Unión, Banco Ganadero, Banco BISA, and BancoSol are usually the best places to start. Always decline DCC and be charged in bolivianos. Clean USD notes are useful as backup in the messy exchange environment.

Bolivia changes a lot by altitude. The Altiplano, La Paz, Uyuni, Titicaca, stays cold and dry, with sunny days and nights often below 0°C from May to September. The valleys, Sucre and Cochabamba, are milder, often around 10°C to 25°C. The lowlands, Santa Cruz, Beni, Amazon side, are hot and humid, often 25°C to 35°C, with heavier rain from November to March. Across the country, the dry season is roughly May to October, and the wet season is November to April. Weather can change fast on mountain roads, and that often ruins plans.

The biggest real risk is transport trouble, especially protests, roadblocks, and long overland delays. After that, the usual problems are petty theft, fake police checks, and bad taxis in cities like La Paz and Santa Cruz. Use registered taxis or apps at night. Keep valuables on your body on buses. Do not give your passport or cash to anyone on the street who claims authority. Chapare is the clear area to avoid. In cities, ask hostel staff which blocks feel unsafe after dark, because one street can seem fine and the next can feel very different.

Buses are the main backpacker option. They are cheap and cover many routes, but reliability is the weak point. Tickets Bolivia is the most useful booking site. Operators on common routes include Trans Copacabana S.A., Todo Turismo, Trans Omar, Panasur, Vicuña Travel, Trans Titicaca, and Manco Kapac. La Paz to Copacabana costs about Bs44 to Bs77 online. La Paz to Uyuni costs about Bs165 to Bs396. In La Paz, Mi Teleférico is excellent, with Bs3 for the first line and Bs2 for transfers. For city rides, inDrive and Yango are usually the easiest option after dark.

Altitude is the main health issue, especially in La Paz and on the classic highland loop. Take the first day slowly and drink plenty of water. Coca tea is common for a reason. Some travelers also use acetazolamide. Tap water is usually not a good idea, so drink filtered or treated water. In lower and warmer regions, dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses matter more. Yellow fever is also worth considering for Santa Cruz and jungle routes. Outside major cities, medical care becomes limited quickly, so good insurance with evacuation cover is worth the money.

Buy a local prepaid SIM instead of trusting only hostel WiFi and hope. Entel is the best overall option, especially if your trip includes smaller towns or rural areas. Tigo is strong in bigger cities. VIVA can be cheaper, but coverage is less reliable for a wide route. Entel prepaid examples go from Bs15 for 1,000 MB to Bs50 for 2,000 MB, with smaller daily packs from Bs2 to Bs4. Buy one in an official carrier shop or authorized dealer, bring your passport for registration, and set it up in a city. Internet in Santa Cruz is usually solid, decent in parts of La Paz and Sucre, and less reliable elsewhere.

Spanish is the most useful travel language. Aymara and Quechua are widely spoken in the highlands, and some people use an indigenous language first, especially in smaller towns. English is uneven. In hostels, tour agencies, and with some younger staff in La Paz, Sucre, and Uyuni, basic English is common enough. At bus terminals, markets, local eateries, and family-run hospedajes, expect little or none. Basic Spanish helps a lot, and Bolivia is a good place to learn it, especially in Sucre.

Daily life feels more local than tourist-friendly, so patience helps. Greet people first, be polite, and do not start making demands right away. Bolivians are usually warm if you are respectful and stay low-key. Tipping is light, usually around 5% to 10% in sit-down restaurants if service is not already included. Bargaining happens in markets, but keep it friendly and do not argue over very small amounts. Clothes can be casual, but in highland towns and rural areas, it is smarter to cover up a bit more.

Bolivia is great for cheap and filling food, especially in markets. Almuerzo or menú del día is the base of budget eating. It often includes soup, a main dish, and a drink for the rough equivalent of a few dollars. Street and market meals can be very cheap. Expect salteñas in the morning, anticuchos at night, and dishes like pique macho, silpancho, sajta, or fricasé depending on the region. In markets, ask what is fresh and busy, then follow the office workers. Santa Cruz has more lowland, meat-heavy food, while the highlands focus on soups, potatoes, corn, and very large portions.
