Uruguay uses the Uruguayan peso, UYU, and it is one of the more expensive countries in the region, especially for restaurant meals. Cards are widely accepted and are often the best payment option, with possible VAT discounts on some tourist purchases. So it makes sense to pay by card first and keep cash for buses, small shops, and backup. ATMs are easy to find, and RedBROU is often the lower-fee option, but withdrawal limits can be frustrating. Always reject dynamic currency conversion. Montevideo hostels are often around USD 13 to 15 a night, and cooking some of your own meals can save a lot of money here.

Uruguay is mostly one large climate zone, but the coast and the north do not feel the same. The south and Atlantic coast, including Montevideo, Punta del Este, and Rocha, are milder and windier. Summer highs are around 23°C on the coast, and the sea can stay cold even in warm months. The north is hotter, and summer heat waves can reach 38°C to 40°C. Rain comes all year, not in one clear wet season, and summer thunderstorms are common. Winter, June to August, is cool, gray, and breezy, not severely cold.

Uruguay is one of the safer countries in South America, but Montevideo still has a real risk of street crime. That is the main safety issue to watch. Petty theft, bag-snatching, ATM theft, and sometimes muggings do happen, especially in empty or badly lit areas. In Montevideo, take extra care downtown at night and near the port area on weekends. Other places feel calmer, but normal city caution still matters. Scams are less common than simple theft. Keep phones out of sight, use ATMs inside banks or malls, and do not walk around empty streets late at night.

Buses do most transport in Uruguay, and they work well. Montevideo’s Tres Cruces is the main hub, and URUBUS is useful for checking schedules and buying tickets. Companies you will often see are COT and COPSA. Montevideo city buses are cheap, UYU 52 with an STM card for a 1-hour ticket, or UYU 64 in cash. For intercity travel, Montevideo to Punta del Este starts around UYU 997, and Montevideo to Colonia is around UYU 3,902. Uber and Cabify are useful backup options in cities, but buses usually give better value.

Tap water is usually safe in Uruguay, which removes one common backpacker problem. More common issues are sun, wind, dehydration, mosquito bites, and normal travel stomach trouble, rather than problems from the country itself. It is worth taking chikungunya precautions, so bring repellent. Summer beach days can burn people quickly, even when the wind makes it feel less strong. Medical care is good for the region, especially in Montevideo and Maldonado, but treatment can cost a lot, so insurance is a good idea. In an emergency, ambulance is 911.

Uruguay is generally good for internet, and Montevideo, Colonia, Punta del Este, Maldonado, and Rocha usually have strong connections. Antel is the best all-around SIM choice, with wide national coverage. One published prepaid offer is 5 GB plus minutes for UYU 260 for 7 days, and a new prepaid line can be activated with a UYU 290 recharge. Claro is another workable option, with packs from UYU 80 for 1 GB over 5 days up to UYU 550 for 7 GB over 30 days. Buy in official branches and bring your passport. Cabo Polonio is the main exception, because it is very off-grid.

Spanish is the daily language, and the local Rioplatense accent can be harder to understand than textbook Spanish. English is available in some hostels, tourist businesses, and parts of Montevideo, Colonia, and Punta del Este, but it becomes much less common on buses, in markets, and in smaller towns. Basic Spanish helps a lot, especially for transport, food, and everyday conversation. Near the Brazil border, some people also speak portuñol.

Uruguay moves at a relaxed pace, but people are not unfriendly. Locals are usually warm, easy to speak with, and mate is everywhere, with a thermos under one arm like a national habit. Meals, especially asado, are social and slow. Tipping about 10% in restaurants is normal. Bargaining is uncommon outside street markets, so asking for discounts in regular shops usually feels awkward. People dress casually but fairly neatly in cities. First-time visitors are often surprised by how quiet the country feels, and by how expensive that quiet daily life can be.

Uruguay’s food is heavy on meat, simple, and social. Asado is the main ritual, not only a meal, and parrillas are often where you spend the most money. Chivito is the classic sandwich to look for, and mate is almost part of the background all day. Street food and simple bakery stops can help lower costs, but eating out is still expensive for the region. Budget travelers usually do better by mixing hostel cooking with an occasional parrilla meal. In Montevideo, buying food at a supermarket can save more than trying to eat every meal out. And yes, dulce de leche shows up often, with no apology at all.
