Panama divides clearly between hot lowlands and cooler mountains. Panama City, the Pacific coast, and most beach areas stay hot and sticky all year, often around 28°C to 32°C in the day, with high humidity. Boquete and El Valle feel much more comfortable, often closer to 15°C to 24°C depending on elevation and time of day. The Pacific side has a clearer dry season from December to April and wetter months from May to November. The Caribbean side, including Bocas del Toro, stays wetter all year, with shorter good-weather periods and more surprises.

The biggest real risk is usually petty crime and poor decisions, not extreme danger, unless someone goes toward the Darién border area, which is not a normal travel zone. In Panama City, stay in safer central areas like El Cangrejo and San Francisco. Use Uber at night instead of walking without a plan. Watch your phone and wallet in bus stations, on buses, and in busy tourist areas. Taxis may charge too much, so Uber is usually the better choice. Some city neighborhoods are best avoided after dark, especially if they already look half-empty.

Panama City is easy to visit without a car. Uber is common and usually better than street taxis, especially at night and from the airport, where rides into town are often around USD 22 to 25. The Metro is cheap, and MiBus covers the missing parts. For longer trips, Albrook Terminal is the main bus center, and buses are usually clean, reliable, and affordable. Panama City to David is around USD 22, then you continue to Boquete or Bocas. For Bocas, the normal budget route is a bus to Almirante, then a boat with Ferry Bocas.

Mosquitoes are the main travel health problem here, and dengue is a real risk, especially in wetter areas and places like Bocas del Toro. Use repellent, cover your skin around dusk, and do not ignore bites. Tap water is usually fine in much of Panama, but it is not trusted in Bocas del Toro or Guna Yala. Panama City has good private medical care, but outside the capital services become limited quickly, and serious cases may need transfer. Good insurance is worth it, especially for islands, jungle areas, and long bus trips.

Panama City has reliable internet for the region, and Boquete is also a strong backup base with good Wi-Fi and even fiber in some places. Bocas del Toro is fine for normal use, but it is weaker and less reliable. On the coasts, rainy season can cause power cuts, and that is when remote work plans can become difficult. For mobile data, the main SIM choices are Tigo and Más Móvil. Tigo prepaid packs include unlimited bundles like B/.3.85 for 3 days, B/.6.00 for 5 days, and B/.7.00 for 7 days. You can buy a SIM at airport kiosks, carrier shops, or convenience stores.

Spanish is the main language for daily life, transport, shops, and local restaurants. English is fairly common in Panama City, Boquete, and more touristy places, so basic travel is possible without much Spanish. On buses, in markets, and in smaller towns, English becomes much less common. A translation app helps a lot. Even simple Spanish for food, directions, and prices can save time and avoid awkward silent moments.

Panama feels more modern and more expensive than many backpackers expect, especially in the capital. The daily pace is relaxed enough, but service can feel direct, especially in touristy places in Panama City, so do not expect extra friendliness with the menu. A simple greeting helps a lot. Tipping is modest, and many restaurants already add 10 percent, so check before you leave more. Bargaining is limited, mostly in informal markets or souvenir stalls. Dress is casual in beach towns, but Panama City is often a bit neater, and churches or offices expect more coverage.

Budget food in Panama is easiest at local restaurants and fondas, where meals can cost around USD 4 to 10 including a drink. This is the best value, because tourist restaurants become expensive very quickly. Expect rice, beans, plantains, chicken, soups, and seafood depending on the coast. In Panama City, local lunch places are much better value than eating every meal in Casco Viejo, where the bill can get silly for no good reason. In Bocas and other islands, prices go up because everything arrives by boat in the end, and your wallet will feel it quickly.
