The city feels like two different places. Casco Viejo is social, neat, and easy to walk. It has rooftop bars, cocktail places, and people moving between dinner and drinks. El Cangrejo feels more normal and useful, but not as pretty. Outside these areas, the city is built more for cars, feels very humid, and has a business feel. Nights can be busy, especially near Casco, but this is not a cheap, wild backpacker party city. It works best as a smart city stop with good food and easy transport.

Skip Panama City if you want a cheap, slow, beach-style backpacker stop where everything is walkable and social life starts easily. This city is hotter, more expensive, and more Americanized than much of Central America, and some travelers think it feels dull after two or three days. If humidity quickly puts you in a bad mood, or you dislike using Uber between neighborhoods, that tradeoff can become annoying. Still, it can work very well for an easy arrival, good food, and a few strong city days.

Most people arrive at Tocumen, and the helpful surprise is that the airport now connects to the Metro. The cheapest choice is Metro Line 2 from the airport branch, then change into the city. It costs about US$0.35 per ride and takes roughly an hour if you go toward Albrook or central zones. Uber is much easier with a backpack. It is usually US$22-28 to El Cangrejo or Casco Viejo, with 35-45 minutes in normal traffic. MiBus can also work, but checking the app helps because routes on your first day are not always clear.

Dry season, from December through April, is the best time to go. Days are still hot, around 29-31°C, but the sky is clearer, canal visits are easier, and walking in Casco or on Cinta Costera feels less hard. January to March have the nicest weather, but prices are higher and rooms fill up more. From May into November, expect heavy humidity and afternoon rain. Sometimes it is only a short shower, and sometimes it is enough to ruin plans. September and October are the wettest months. Also check museum schedules, because many close on Mondays.

Panama City is easy compared with other places in the region. US dollars are accepted everywhere, and you may receive balboa coins as change. Cards are fine in most cafes, supermarkets, and nicer restaurants, but cash is still useful for markets and small purchases. Bank ATMs are easy to find, and withdrawal fees are often around US$2-5. Because of that, taking out one bigger amount is usually smarter. Internet is strong enough for video calls, tap water is usually okay in the city, and many museums close on Mondays, which surprises people.

Panama City is fairly relaxed if you stay careful, especially in Casco Viejo, El Cangrejo, San Francisco, Avenida Balboa, and other central areas. The main problem is theft when people get a chance, not nonstop trouble. Do not keep phones in back pockets. Be more careful around Albrook, busy viewpoints, and crowded waterfront areas, and avoid random standalone ATMs after dark. Near Casco, one block can feel polished and the next can feel less comfortable, so do not walk around without thinking late at night. After dark, Uber is usually the sensible choice. Traffic is aggressive, so pay close attention when crossing roads.
