Salar de Uyuni

In southwest Bolivia, white salt reaches the horizon while dark islands rise suddenly from the flat ground. Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat on Earth, lying high at about 3,650 meters. A 4x4 drive takes you over crunchy salt to Isla Incahuasi, a rocky island full of cactus plants. Simple paths on the island lead to high viewpoints, with endless white around and dark volcanoes far away. Days here often feel slow, as photo stops and short walks break long drives across the empty salt flat. The strong sun and thin air can make long walking hard, so most exploring happens by vehicle. At the flooded edge after rain, you step through a layer of cool water and watch sky and salt reflect together.

Timing changes this place completely. Sunrise is quieter and gentler, while sunset gives the best colors. In the wet months, a thin layer of water can turn the flats into a huge mirror. Ask agencies very clearly if they really go early or late enough, because some tours promise that feeling but give you the same usual midday loop.
3-day / 2-night Uyuni salt flats and Sud Lípez jeep tour$$
This is the full Salar de Uyuni trip, not only a quick photo stop on the salt. Day 1 goes onto the salar, then the route continues to colored lagoons, flamingos, geysers, hot springs, rock formations, and wide empty desert. Expect early starts, 4 to 6 hours of driving on most days, high altitude, and very basic places to sleep.
Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama cross-border jeep routeView$$
This is a smart overland choice if Chile is your next stop. It covers much of the same high-altitude desert route as the classic multi-day trip, but it avoids going back and leaves you across the border. It works well for backpackers continuing onward, but it is less useful if you need to return to Uyuni anyway.
4-day Tupiza to Uyuni route$$
If the route can begin in Tupiza, this version is better for some travellers. You see quieter scenery, red-rock canyons, and Lípez landscapes first, then finish on the salar instead of starting with the busiest section. There is more jeep time overall, but usually fewer crowds at the main stops.

Things to try

Llama dishes
Uyuni is a good place to try llama steak or other llama dishes. It is one of the most common local proteins on restaurant menus and feels much more Altiplano than ordering another pizza.
Quinoa soup
This is a warm, simple highland staple that suits Uyuni’s cold, dry weather very well. It is worth ordering at lunch spots and local restaurants, especially after early starts and dusty jeep rides.
Salteñas with api
This is classic morning food. Buy salteñas early from street stalls or near the market, then drink hot purple-corn api with them. If you go too late, the best ones are already gone.
Chairo
This is a filling Andean soup that works very well in the cold here. Look for it in markets and simple lunch places if you want something local and warming.

Llica and the Tunupa side of the salar$
This is the less usual side of Uyuni, more independent, less easy, and much quieter. Transport from Uyuni is limited and sometimes strangely informal, with reports of a side-street bus to Llica across the salar taking around 3 hours. Once you arrive, the north side offers remote village life, huge salar views, and access to hikes that most jeep tours never reach.

For travellers who want a truly remote hike instead of another jeep stop, this is a strong option. The route can be done across open country from Llica, and camping is possible by the crater, so it suits people who are comfortable being self-sufficient, navigating, and managing very basic logistics. It is definitely not an easy extra activity, and that is exactly why it stays quiet.
Cueva de las Galaxias and San Pedro de QuemesView$$
This is a good side trip if Incahuasi feels too obvious. The cave has unusual fossilized formations, and the village base on the south edge makes the salar feel much emptier and more remote. It is easiest on a return-to-Uyuni loop or a custom itinerary, because many one-way backpacker routes into Chile do not give enough time to explore this side properly.

It is only about 10 km from Uyuni, but most people miss it while hurrying to the salt. Come for abandoned rail stock, mining history, and a heavier, rougher feeling than the Train Cemetery. It works well as a half-day side trip if you have a free afternoon and do not want another full salar excursion.
Chiquini Cave near Tahua$$$
This is a very specialized stop, best for people already staying overnight on the north rim near Coquesa or Tahua. The cave is known for unusual geological textures and feels much stranger than the classic salt-flat sights. It is hard to manage without local 4WD help, so it suits travellers who enjoy complicated plans and do not mind some difficulty.

Practicalities

Uyuni town is mainly a useful transport stop. It has tour offices, dusty streets, backpacks, and people comparing agencies over pizza and coffee. The social side is real, but it does not last long. Most talks are about buses, altitude pills, and whether the mirror effect is there. After the jeep leaves town, the feeling changes quickly. The hours become quieter, the views become stranger, and the group often turns into its own small bubble. Expect shared adventure, not nightlife or relaxed slow travel.

Skip Salar de Uyuni if your trip needs to be comfortable, flexible, and exactly on time. It is not a good choice for travelers who dislike long days in a vehicle, basic rooms, freezing mornings, or sharing space with strangers. It also disappoints people who expect a charming town, lots of independent exploring, or an easy quick stop before a flight. Strong sensitivity to altitude is another real reason to skip it. For backpackers who love landscapes, the reward is huge, but the tradeoff is clear. This trip needs patience, some toughness, and extra room in the itinerary when things go wrong.

The usual way to arrive is an overnight bus to Uyuni, then a shared 4x4 onto the salar. From La Paz, companies like Todo Turismo, Panasur, and Trans Omar usually take about 9 to 10 hours and cost about Bs 105 to Bs 250, plus a small terminal fee. You can book seats quite easily on Tickets Bolivia, but comfort is very different between buses, so the cheapest ticket may feel very poor by dawn. A more scenic choice is a bus to Oruro, then the Ferroviaria Andina train, Expreso del Sur or Wara Wara del Sur, but these departures only run on certain days.

If you want the mirror effect, go from January to March. This is the wet season. Then, shallow water can make the flats look like a reflection. But this season also has the highest risk of flooded routes, missed island stops, and itinerary changes. May to October is safer for access, clear skies, and the classic white hexagon crust. June to August can be very cold at night. April to May and October to November are the best middle choice. These months have fewer weather problems and may bring mixed conditions. September is dry. It is not mirror season.

In Uyuni, plan to use cash first. There are ATMs in town, including Banco Unión, BNB, BCP, and Banco Mercantil Santa Cruz, but foreign cards do not always work and machines can run out of money. Bring enough bolivianos before the tour, especially for extras and the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve fee, usually around Bs 150 cash only. Wi-Fi in town is simple, and mobile data usually works, but the signal mostly disappears after the jeep leaves. Power can also be limited at overnight stops. Pack water, lip balm, sunscreen, layers, toilet paper, and a power bank. This place is tougher and drier than it looks in photos.

Street crime is not the biggest worry here. The real dangers are altitude, cold, bad tour operators, and being far from help with no signal. Problems often start on day two or three, when the route goes higher, not when you first arrive in Uyuni. Pick a company with a well-kept 4x4, a spare tire, and a driver who seems alert, not exhausted from the night before. Bring warm layers, sun protection, and extra water. Also leave extra time after the tour, because breakdowns, mud, and road blockades around Uyuni and Potosí can badly disrupt your next plans.
