Destination guide
In Svaneti, grey stone towers rise above small villages, close to Caucasus peaks and glaciers. Between the villages, narrow trails cross meadows and rivers, so travelers can walk for days without leaving this high valley region. Many paths lead to alpine lakes or glacier viewpoints near Mestia, giving simple day hikes with strong mountain views, not city noise. Weather changes fast in the mountains, and heavy rain or fog can hide views and turn paths muddy. Cold river water runs next to many tracks, and stone bridges and grazing animals are part of daily village life. Inside one old Svan tower, travelers can climb steep wooden ladders and see rooms filled with farming tools and family objects.

Plan 4 to 7 nights, enough for a few day hikes or the full Mestia to Ushguli route.
Skip it in snowy months, or anytime easy roads, steady Wi-Fi, late nights, comfort, varied food, and fixed plans matter more than mountain walking.
