Puerto López moves at the pace of a fishing town. Early morning feels active and local, with boats, market shopping, and people planning day trips. In the afternoon, backpackers, couples, and Ecuadorian weekend visitors share the malecón. Nights are usually quiet during most of the week, but weekends get louder. This is not a smooth resort town, and it does not have Montañita party energy. Come for seafood, nature trips, and a base that feels simple and real.

Skip Puerto López if you want a beautiful town, easy luxury, or a surf-and-party scene. The beach is okay, but nearby places are more charming, and the streets can feel old and practical. Some travelers also feel annoyed because accommodation quality does not always match the price. If boats, birds, whales, and national park day trips are not important to you, this place may feel like a stop between places with extra sand. For the right traveler, though, that practical feel is the main reason to come.

The easiest way to arrive is usually by coast bus. From Montañita, regional buses take about 1 hour and cost around US$2.50 to US$3. From Manta, expect about 2 to 2.5 hours for around US$3, often with cooperatives like Manglaralto. From Guayaquil, direct buses take about 3 to 4.5 hours for around US$7 to US$10, and Libertad Peninsular is one company to check. The terminal is north of town, so take a moto-taxi for about US$1. Times are not always exact, so check AndesTransit or ask locally to avoid problems.

June to November is the best time for most people. The weather is drier, and the air feels a little more comfortable. June to October is humpback whale season, and July to September is especially good. December to February can still be a good choice if you want warmer sea temperatures and do not mind some rain. March to May is the most humid period, with more rain and less certain boat conditions. Weekends are busier all year, especially with domestic beach crowds, so midweek is usually calmer and cheaper.

Puerto López is one of the more useful places for cash on this part of the coast, because there are ATMs in town. This matters before smaller places like Ayampe, where cash is less dependable. You still should not rely on cards for every payment. Internet is good enough for planning and messages, but not always strong for boat-trip planning or busy weekends. Town services are basic but helpful, with a TIA supermarket and small shops. Think of it as a practical base, not a comfort stop with endless options.

Most problems here are the normal kind for a coastal town, not anything extreme. Watch your bags around the malecón, the beach, and the bus terminal area, especially after dark or on busy weekends. The terminal is outside the center, so a moto-taxi at night is safer than walking. For Isla de la Plata or whale trips, book with known operators on the waterfront, make sure life jackets are really on the boat, and follow sea conditions. Strong sun and dehydration can affect you faster than you expect.
