San Juan del Sur

Waves roll into the wide bay of San Juan del Sur, in front of a town of bright houses and simple guesthouses. The central beach curves beside the streets, with small bars, food stalls, and constant reggae or salsa music. Pickup trucks carry surfboards to beaches like Playa Maderas, which have steady waves and long, gentle lines for surfing. Surf sessions there often mix with slow hammock time back in town, giving San Juan del Sur a relaxed rhythm. The town is known for Sunday Funday, large pool parties in hillside hostels where music echoes over the bay. Above it all, the Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia stands on a hill, a white statue above the curved bay.

Sunset walk to Cristo de la MisericordiaViewFree
This is the easy classic walk above town. You can walk up in about 45 minutes each way, or take a taxi if the hill feels too hard in the heat. Late afternoon is the best time for bay views and sunset. Bring water and good shoes, because the climb is short but sweaty.
Beach-hop the south coast$
San Juan works best as a base, not only as a town beach stop. Take taxis or shuttles to nearby beaches for a couple of half-days, especially if town starts to feel too focused on partying. It is a good option for mixed groups, where some people want surf and others only want sand and shade.
Surf lesson at Playa Maderas$$
This is the usual San Juan del Sur surf day. Playa Maderas is the nearby beach most backpackers choose for beginner lessons. You can book in town with transport, or arrange it on the beach. Go early because mornings are better, and weekends get crowded very fast.
Sunday Funday hostel and bar crawl$$
If San Juan del Sur has one famous backpacker activity, this is it. It is basically a moving day party through hostels and bars. There is lots of pool time and even bigger hangovers. It is fun if you like that kind of thing, and very easy to skip if you do not.
Night turtle-watching at La Flor Wildlife Refuge$$
This is the best nature trip near town when the season is right. During arribada months, go out after dark to watch olive ridley turtles nesting. Check the timing before you pay, because outside the right season this can disappoint quickly. It is usually arranged with transport from San Juan.

A small central hostel that gets the balance right, close to the beach and shuttle stops, social enough to meet people, but usually calm at night. The kitchen is useful, staff are solid, and it feels better for laid-back travelers than hard-party types.

Things to try

Gallo pinto$
This is the classic Nicaraguan breakfast, with rice and beans made well. It is best with eggs, cheese, and plantains, especially at market stalls or simple comedores where it still feels like breakfast and not branding.
Nacatamales$
This is worth trying if you find it fresh, especially earlier in the day. It is a filling corn dough parcel with stuffing inside. It fits breakfast or lunch better, unless a very heavy dinner feels normal to you.
Ceviche and fried fish$$
Because it is on the coast, seafood is the clear choice when the catch is fresh. Ceviche is especially good in the heat. Fried fish is the bigger sit-down option when lunch becomes a long afternoon meal.

Playa El Coco$$
This is a real quiet escape south of town. It is better for swimming and relaxing than for surfing. The beach is quiet, wide, and only lightly developed, and that is exactly why people come. The tradeoff is getting there. There are no shuttles, the roads can be rough, and a motorbike, ATV, taxi, or 4x4 makes the trip much easier. It works well as a slow day trip or an overnight stay away from the party scene.
Playa Escameca$
This is a quieter surf-and-swim choice if Playa Maderas feels too obvious. It is close enough to reach without too much trouble, around 20 to 30 minutes south, but it still feels much less busy than the main backpacker circuit. Expect a long beach, fewer people, some local food nearby, and dirt-road sections on the way in. It is good for travelers who want beach time without the full San Juan social circus.
Playa Majagual$
This is a strong extra trip for sunset and one of the better less-known beaches near San Juan. People come for the atmosphere, the quieter coast, fewer people, and the big rock spire with waves crashing around it near sunset. It is best as a taxi or shuttle outing when town starts to feel too busy. It is an easy extra stop, not a major trip.
El Ostional$
This is a local fishing village and beach that still sits outside the usual San Juan route. Come for a quieter coast, sunset, and a more everyday feeling than the surf-hostel area. Transport is the difficult part. It is easiest by taxi, motorbike, or other private transport, so it suits travelers who do not mind some extra effort for a place that is less polished.

Practicalities

San Juan del Sur feels social very quickly. Surfers, backpackers, weekend partiers, remote workers, and many foreigners mix together here. Because of that, it can feel more gringo and more commercial than other parts of Nicaragua. Still, the party side is easier to avoid than many people expect, except on Sundays and holidays. Days are slow and beach-focused. Nights can be quiet in relaxed bars or loud in hostel party spots. If the town feels too busy, nearby beaches like Maderas are calmer but still social.

Skip San Juan del Sur if you want a calm beach town that feels local, has a great town beach, and has very little foreigner presence. This is not that kind of place. The town bay is not the main attraction, prices are high for Nicaragua, and reaching the better beaches takes some effort. If you dislike nightlife, rough roads, weak internet, or places built around surfing and backpacker social life, other places will suit you better. But if you want easy surf access, simple socializing, and a beach base with some chaos around the edges, it works well.

Most backpackers arrive overland from Costa Rica, not from Managua. The usual route is to fly to San José or Liberia, cross at Peñas Blancas, and continue through Rivas to San Juan del Sur. TICA is the best-known bus company for the long international part. Shuttle companies like Nicatura and Spring Bus are easier if you want help at the border. From Rivas, the yellow local bus to San Juan del Sur costs about C$30 and takes around an hour. Pay attention in Rivas, because taxi drivers often start the usual scams there.

December to April is the simplest choice. It is sunny and dry, and it is best for beach days, surf trips, and easier transport on the rough roads to the beaches. February to April is especially dry, but April gets very hot, often around 31°C. May to October is the rainy season. The hills are greener, there are fewer crowds, and short heavy downpours can disrupt transport. September and October are the wettest months. Semana Santa makes the town much louder and messier. It is great if you want to party, and terrible if you want to sleep.

You still need cash here more often than you may want. The BAC ATM in town is usually the safest choice, but the fees hurt. Take out a good amount, and keep small bills for taxis, beach shuttles, and small shops. Do not trust the tap water. Drink filtered or bottled water instead. Wi-Fi is good enough for normal use in many hostels and cafes, but outages happen and the power can also go out. If reliable work is important, bring a local SIM, a power bank, and low expectations. Playa Maderas is even less convenient for groceries and basic things.

San Juan del Sur is usually one of the easier places in Nicaragua for travelers, including solo women, but normal beach-town caution still matters. The main problem is petty theft near nightlife, busy bars, and drunk Sundays. It is not usually some big street danger. Do not walk alone late at night on quiet side streets or in isolated areas. Do not leave your phone or bag alone on the beach. In Rivas, watch for transport scams and pressure from taxi drivers. One simple rule works here: stay alert after dark and keep your plans simple.
