Most days in Lima feel calm in a good way. Then the traffic and horns remind you it is still a huge capital. Most backpackers stay in Miraflores and Barranco. Miraflores feels neat, easy, and a bit expat-focused. Barranco is quieter, more artistic, and better for bars and meeting people naturally. There is a social scene, but it is smaller and less intense than Medellín or CDMX. Lima is best when you see it as a city of neighborhoods, not a city for checking off sights.

Skip Lima if your Peru dream is only mountains, colonial streets, and instant romance. Also skip it if big-city traffic makes you unhappy. The city can feel gray, spread out, and strangely limited, because most travelers stay in only a few safe districts. If you have little time, one or two nights may be enough before going to Cusco, Arequipa, or the south coast. But if you care about food, surf, city neighborhoods, or want an easy start at sea level before the Andes, Lima is worth it.

Most people enter Peru through Jorge Chávez Airport in Callao. If you stay in Miraflores, Airport Express Lima is usually the easiest cheap option. It runs between the airport and four Miraflores stops, usually hourly from 07:00 to 22:00, for S/20, or S/15 each if two or more travel together. App rides to Miraflores are often around S/40-S/70 off-peak. Use the official taxi counters or a rideshare, not random drivers outside. Coming by bus is less easy, because Lima has no single central terminal. Companies like Cruz del Sur, Oltursa, and CIVA use different depots.

December through March is when Lima looks best. It is warmer, brighter, and really feels like a coastal city, with days often in the mid-20s°C. January and February are especially good if you want sunsets, bike rides, and surf without the gray skies. February to April is a good time, with nice weather but not a peak-summer feeling every day. June through September is the famous garúa season. It is cool, damp, and very cloudy, often around 15°C to 18°C, and hostels can feel colder than you expect. Lima almost never gets real rain, so plans are rarely canceled, but winter can feel dull. November is a good value month because the sun starts to return.

Money is fairly easy here by Peru standards. Cards work in many places, especially in Miraflores and Barranco. But small shops, markets, and sometimes broken card machines mean you should carry some soles. Airport ATMs are useful, but the fees can hurt, often around S/25-S/36. Withdrawal limits can also be low. Internet is reliable, especially in Miraflores, so remote work is possible. If you can, avoid airport SIM deals because they are usually overpriced. Buy an eSIM or a city SIM from Claro, Entel, or Movistar instead. Do not drink tap water. Also remember that water cuts sometimes happen by district.

Your choice of neighborhood changes the whole Lima experience. Miraflores, Barranco, and much of San Isidro are the easiest areas to stay. Centro is interesting in the daytime, but it feels less comfortable after dark. The bus-terminal areas in La Victoria need extra care. Outside the airport corridor, much of Callao is not a place to walk around casually. Use Uber, Cabify, or another app ride instead of street taxis, especially at night. Keep phones and cash out of sight. Do not walk home drunk alone. Also watch the roads because drivers are aggressive. One small scam in Miraflores is a woman asking you to buy expensive baby formula at a pharmacy.
