Destination guide
Soft brown river water moves past low, faded colonial houses and palm trees around a quiet town center. Kampot sits along this river in southern Cambodia and spreads out as a small town with old French-era buildings. Simple wooden boats and kayaks slide over the water, passing bamboo piers where locals wash clothes or fish. Days here often pass slowly, with long pauses beside the river and easy walks through the grid of streets. Beyond the town, rice fields and salt pans stretch toward hills, and narrow tracks link small villages to the river. In the countryside, guided visits to Kampot pepper farms include tasting peppercorns from the vine, which give a strong, spicy smell.

Sleepy, social, and a little older in feel, Kampot suits lazy days, riverside cafes, gentle nightlife, and small adventures out to Kep.
Two to four nights works best, enough for town time, a pepper farm, kayaking, and maybe Kep.
Skip it with short Cambodia time, party plans, or beach hopes. Kampot is slow, expat-heavy, and light on big sights and landmark hits.
