Destination guide
In Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley, travelers wander through busy bazaars full of fruit and handmade cloth. The valley is Uzbekistan's most fertile region, with green fields, orchards, and villages stretching between dry hills. At town markets, the smell of hot bread and ripe melons fills the air. Rishtan is known for blue-glazed pottery. Kokand holds old madrasas and the restored Khudayar Khan Palace. Because towns sit close together, it is easy to visit several markets and pottery centers in one day. Margilan is the main silk town, where families have woven patterned ikat for generations. In Margilan's small silk workshops, travelers watch ikat fabric being woven on wooden looms an arm's length away.

At a glance
Calm, local, and easygoing, more tea houses and market walks than backpacker bars, with everyday city life, craft shopping, and slow afternoons.
Give it 2 to 4 nights, enough for Kokand, Margilan, Rishtan, and a few bazaars without rushing.
Skip it on a short first Uzbekistan trip, or if thin nightlife, less English, and slow market-and-craft days sound flat or tiring.
