Arica moves at a slow pace. Days are bright, breezy, and a little faded by the sun. Surfers go to the coast, overlanders sort out bus tickets, and travelers rest after crossing from Peru. Skip Arica if you want a big backpacker social scene, many polished sights, or a place where the town itself fills several days. This city works better as a quiet stop than as the main attraction. If your time in Chile is short, some travelers are happier leaving after one night. But if border days leave you tired and you want sun, sea air, and easy travel plans, Arica can be exactly right.

Most travelers arrive from Tacna, Peru, and the border crossing is usually simple. Buses and shared taxis run all day. The drive is about 1 hour, but border formalities can make the trip much longer, so morning departures are better.
