San Pedro follows tour times. Before sunrise, vans leave for El Tatio. In the late afternoon, people come back dusty from Valle de la Luna or the high lagoons. Between those times, the center is busy with bikes, tour offices, and travelers talking about plans over coffee or beer. Yes, it is touristy, but it still feels friendly and social, not fake. Nights are calm enough for stargazing, not big parties. The town feels like a base camp, small, simple, and focused on the desert around it.

Skip San Pedro if deserts do not interest you, in body or mind. The town is small, food and tours are expensive for backpackers, and much of the appeal depends on paying for excursions or making the effort to go by bike or rental car. It is also a poor choice if you need reliable internet for work or want a place with strong city life, museums, and nightlife. But if huge skies, dry air, and thin-air mornings sound exciting, this place often stays with you in a good way.

Most people arrive through Calama. The simplest option is a shared airport shuttle, often with TransVIP, straight to San Pedro for around CLP 15,000, usually about 1.5 hours depending on stops. The cheaper option is a bus like Atacama 2000 or Pullman Bus from Calama for roughly CLP 7,000 to 8,000, with frequent departures and about the same travel time. Airport minibuses often line up with flights, so this part is easy. The more difficult arrivals are the land routes from Uyuni or Salta, where schedules are less frequent and border timing can become messy.

April to May and September to November are the best times to go. Days are comfortable, skies are usually clear, and the town feels a little less busy than in peak summer. December to March is the more risky period because the altiplanic rains can bring clouds, storms, and sometimes tour changes, especially on high routes. June to August can be good if you like crisp air and clear stargazing, but pre-dawn geyser trips can feel very hard and nights get cold quickly. If a tour is canceled here, the weather is usually the reason.

Cash matters more here than in much of Chile. There are only a few ATMs in town. They may be empty or not work well. Many agencies and small businesses still prefer cash, so bring enough Chilean pesos and a backup card. Internet works fine for messages and bookings in town. It is not reliable for serious video calls, and it gets worse once you leave the center. The altitude begins in town, around 2,400 m, so take it easy on your first day. Also check room cooling and heating carefully, because desert nights can get very cold.

The town itself is usually calm. The real danger is the desert itself. The midday sun around Valle de la Luna, Cejar, and bike routes can drain you fast, so carry plenty of water, use sunscreen, and bring a layer for wind. At El Tatio, the main risk is the pre-dawn cold and the altitude, especially if you rushed into high tours on your first day. On Ruta 23 toward Socaire, get fuel before leaving town. In Valle de la Luna, stay on marked trails. Rangers do enforce this, and the land is fragile.
