Cali moves more slowly than Medellín, at least before night. Afternoons can feel quiet because the heat is strong. Then the mood changes, and people go to dance classes, bars, and late dinners. Salsa brings people together, and it is one of the easiest ways to meet others quickly. The city feels more local, less polished, and a bit harder in places. People often start friendly conversations, but your neighborhood choice changes the whole trip.

Skip Cali if you do not care about dancing, if strong city heat makes you tired, or if you want an easy first stop with many famous sights. This city asks for more judgment than Medellín’s tourist areas. The reward is mostly culture, nightlife, and local rhythm, not landmarks. Some Spanish also helps. If you enjoy cities with lots of music, feel fine with a less polished place, and like to build your nights around salsa, Cali works much better.

Flying into Alfonso Bonilla Aragón Airport, CLO, is the easiest way to arrive. The airport is in Palmira, so you still need a road transfer to Cali. This usually takes 25 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. A normal taxi to central neighborhoods costs about COP 70,000. App rides with Uber, DiDi, inDrive, or Taxis Libres are common once you have data. Flying makes booking simple. Long-distance buses from other Colombian cities are possible, but the trips are long. From Ecuador, the Tulcán, Rumichaca, Ipiales route can feel very tiring.

January to February and June to August are the best times if you want easier walking and fewer plans ruined by rain. July is usually one of the driest months. April to May and October to November are harder, with heavier rain that can flood streets and slow traffic across town. Heat stays quite similar all year, so rain matters more than temperature. Late December to mid-January and parts of July to August can feel busier because of Colombian holiday travel, so book earlier if your dates are fixed.

Cali uses COP, and cash is still important for street food, small shops, and some taxis. ATMs are fairly easy to find, but fees and withdrawal limits are common. It is better to take out a larger amount. Always choose COP if the machine offers conversion. Tap water is usually safe in the city. Mobile data is normally good enough for maps and ride apps. Building Wi‑Fi can be uneven, so a local SIM or eSIM is useful. Sundays can catch visitors by surprise. Major roads close in the morning for Ciclovida.

Cali needs more care on the street than Colombia’s more tourist-friendly cities. San Antonio, Miraflores, Vipasa, and La Flora often feel easier for many travelers. But the feeling can change quickly from one block to the next, and after dark. Keep your phone out of sight on the street. Use Uber, DiDi, inDrive, or a registered taxi at night. Do not walk in empty areas after bars close. Flashy jewelry is not a good idea. If a street feels wrong, leave early and trust that feeling. Some travelers have no problems here, and some do.
