In the day, San Andrés feels part lazy beach town and part busy holiday place for Colombian visitors. The North End and main town feel touristy, noisy, and full of shops. The island feels much better once you are in the water or driving on the coastal road. Nights can be loud, with music, dancing, and people awake late, especially on weekends. It is social if you want that. It is calmer if you stay a bit outside the center. Come for Caribbean energy, not for silent island isolation.

Do not choose San Andrés if you want a quiet, little-known island with lots of local character and no resort feeling. Some parts feel developed, expensive for tourists, and a bit untidy, and the internet can still be too unreliable for serious remote work. If beaches by themselves are not enough for you, this island may disappoint. The main exception is if crystal-clear water alone is a good enough reason. In that case, San Andrés still works, especially if you add a side trip to quieter Providencia.

Flying is really the only usual way to arrive. Gustavo Rojas Pinilla Airport, ADZ, has direct flights from Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, and Cali on airlines like Avianca, LATAM, and Wingo. Flights usually take about 1h30 to 2h20. They often cost roughly COP 250,000 to 500,000 one way. The extra hassle is the tourist card, usually around COP 124,000 to 153,000, which you buy before departure. You also need proof of onward travel. Book earlier around holidays. The airport is close to town, so the trip after landing is short and easy.

December through March is the best time, with the driest weather, calmer water, and the strongest chance of good beach days, snorkeling, and cay trips. April can still be a good choice. From May, rain increases, and May to July feels less stable. August to October is the riskier period, with heavier rain, rougher seas, and the wider Caribbean hurricane season affecting the area. October is the least reliable month. Christmas, New Year, and Semana Santa bring bigger crowds and more expensive flights, so book early if you must travel then.

Cash is easier if you deal with it early. ATMs exist, but they are mostly in the center, tourist areas, some supermarkets, and sometimes the airport. Do not expect the same ease as in a big city. Cards work in many restaurants and shops, but small businesses still often want cash. Internet is better now, especially in town, but island service can still be unreliable. Remote work may be fine in one guesthouse and terrible in the next. Bring a power bank, expect occasional power cuts, and ask about drinking water instead of trusting the tap.

San Andrés usually feels easier and calmer than many Colombian cities on the mainland, but that does not mean you should be careless. In the North End, downtown, and near busy nightlife areas late at night, keep your phone out of sight when you are not using it. Do not show cash openly. For many people, the bigger danger is the island itself: sunburn, dehydration, scooter accidents, and rough water on bad-weather days. Wear reef shoes if needed, ride the scooter carefully after dark, and respect sea conditions.
