Destination guide
Boats glide across the water between the city jetty and the green islands close offshore. Kota Kinabalu is a coastal city in Sabah where the sea, islands, and rainforest sit close together. Many travelers use the city as a base for Mount Kinabalu climbs and for trips into nearby rainforest. At night, markets fill the air with smoke from grilled seafood, coffee smells, and the calls of friendly sellers. Plastic stools stand close around simple food stalls, and some drinks come in bags that look a bit funny but taste sweet. From Signal Hill Observatory, travelers watch the tight grid of streets and the wide South China Sea lying beyond the city.

2 to 4 nights is enough for the city, food, and a couple of island or park trips.
Skip it if urban sights, heritage streets, and busy street life are the main goal, or if island and jungle trips sound dull.
