Destination guide
On Tioman Island in Malaysia, sharp rock peaks rise behind narrow beaches and small wooden villages. In the trees, monkeys often jump from branch to branch near the village edges. Close to the sand, clear water and coral reefs make easy snorkel spots with clownfish, parrotfish, and sometimes turtles. Farther out, dive boats visit deeper sites where currents stay strong and big schools of fish move past. Simple jungle paths link the coastal villages to small waterfalls, rock pools, and old rubber trees. Many areas have no cars, only footpaths between houses, and this keeps life slow and social. At nearby Renggis Island, bright reef slopes and large boulders are explored by snorkel and scuba dives in clear green water.

Days feel sleepy and social, with beach cafés, early nights, a few backpackers around ABC, and villages that feel separate from each other.
Give it 3 to 5 nights, enough to settle into one village, snorkel, dive, and fit in a jungle walk.
Skip it for bars, fast transport, or a tight weekend. Also skip late November to February, when ferries, seas, and openings get messy.
