Destination guide
Divers roll backward from small boats into the clear Celebes Sea above bright coral reefs. From this small port town in eastern Sabah, Semporna gives access to famous islands like Sipadan and Mabul. The waterfront holds long rows of dive shops, simple cafés, and busy markets, so the streets feel active from morning. Offshore, clear water shows coral gardens, giant clams, and schools of reef fish close to the surface. Slow boat rides to closer islands in Tun Sakaran Marine Park pass stilt houses and forested hills that rise sharply from the sea. At Bohey Dulang, a steep trail leads to a ridge above a flooded crater, where still blue water fills the bowl below green walls.

At a glance
Working harbor energy, practical days, little nightlife, and a social scene built around dive plans, boat times, and the promise of clear water offshore.
Plan 3 to 5 nights, enough for Semporna logistics, boat days, and island time.
Skip it if rough town vibes, early boats, patchy island comfort, and weather or permit hassle sound tiring, especially when reefs are not the goal.
