Days begin early here. Most people go to Corcovado, Caño Island, or a jungle trail before the heat gets strong. There is a social scene, but it is quiet and focused on trips. You meet people at breakfast, on boats, and after a wet beach landing. Then many people go to bed early. Agujitas feels calm, a little untidy, and much more like a wildlife base than a backpacker party town.

Skip Drake Bay if you want nightlife, easy transport, strong Wi-Fi, or many restaurant options. This place is for travelers who do not mind planning life around boat schedules, humidity, and wildlife trips. If your budget is tight, transport and tours can cost more than in other parts of Costa Rica, and a short trip may feel rushed. For an easier nature stop, Uvita or Manuel Antonio asks less from you. But for remote jungle energy, Drake Bay often works very well for the right traveler.

The usual way to arrive is the public boat from Sierpe, and that trip is a big part of the experience. Tracopa runs buses from San José to Sierpe in about 5 hours. Then the boat leaves around 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 or 4:00 p.m. for Drake Bay. The ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours through mangroves and out to sea. Expect to pay around CRC 10,000 cash for the boat, usually at Donde Jorge in Sierpe, and get there early in high season. If you miss that boat, your day can become difficult very quickly. Bookaway is useful if you want a backup. SANSA is the expensive shortcut.

January to April is the easiest time to go. It is sunnier, drier, and best for beach days, boat trips, and Corcovado trails. But it is also the busiest period, so beds and tours fill early. May to August is still very possible if you can manage afternoon rain and muddier paths. September and October are the hardest months because of heavy rain, difficult transport, and wet hikes. One important warning: Corcovado’s Sirena sector closes for all of October, so that month can ruin the trip you came for.

Cash is more important here than many people think. There is no ATM or bank in Drake Bay, so take out money in Palmar Norte or before that. Bring enough for boats, snacks, tips, and places that charge a card fee. Internet and cell signal can be weak, especially outside Agujitas, and power cuts do happen. Download maps, tickets, and WhatsApp messages before you arrive. This is sea level, hot, and very humid. The real challenge is sweat, mud, and planning ahead in a place with few backup options.

Drake Bay feels quiet, and the bigger risk is transport problems, not city crime. Carry cash carefully, especially on boat days, and do not expect to fix mistakes after you arrive. Wet beach landings are normal, so wear sandals or water shoes and protect your electronics from water. After dark, paths between Agujitas and spread-out lodgings can be dim, muddy, and uneven. Bring a headlamp and do not walk off on jungle trails. In the rainy season, listen to boat captains and guides, because sea conditions and river crossings can become risky very fast.
