Life here starts early with tour pickups and afternoon rain. Later, people come back to town for beer, coffee, and dinner. La Fortuna feels small and made for tourists. You hear a lot of English, and there is a steady mix of nature-focused backpackers, couples, and road trippers. It feels social, but nightlife is limited. Expect casual bars and chats after hikes, not a party scene. Weekends get a little busier when local visitors arrive too.

Skip La Fortuna if a tight budget makes you stressed, or if you want a town with strong local character and cheap daily meals. This place depends on tours, transfers, and paid nature stops, so costs rise quickly, and the center can feel very gringo-heavy. It is also not a strong place for nightlife. If you came to Costa Rica for rainforest walks, wildlife, volcano views, and easy adventure planning, these tradeoffs will probably still work for you.

The most memorable way to arrive is crossing Lake Arenal on the Jeep-Boat-Jeep from Monteverde. Aventuras El Lago runs this route with van pickup, a boat crossing, and van drop-off. It usually takes about 3.5 to 4 hours and costs roughly ₡17,000 to ₡20,000. Book in advance, because some departures need minimum numbers, and rain can change the timing a bit. From San José, shared minivans are the easiest option. Public buses cost less, but they are slower and more frustrating if connections do not match well.

February and March are the best months for clearer volcano views and drier trails. January and April are also good. They are warm and easier for waterfalls, hikes, and road travel. May through August stays green and can be quieter, but afternoon rain becomes part of your day. September and October are the hardest months. They are wetter, cloudier, muddier, and more difficult for transport. Start activities early in any season. Weekends are busier, and Cerro Chato is still officially closed, so do not make plans around that hike.

La Fortuna uses up your budget faster than most backpacker bases in Costa Rica. Even a simple soda lunch can be around ₡5,000. The main sights also get expensive fast: La Fortuna Waterfall about ₡9,000, Arenal Volcano National Park about ₡8,000, and hanging bridges about ₡13,000. ATMs are easy to find in town, including near Banco Nacional, and paying in colones is usually better value. Internet is decent in the center, but weaker outside town. Be ready for humidity, muddy shoes, and an occasional short power cut.

La Fortuna is usually relaxed, but petty theft is the main problem. Keep your bags close at hot springs, restaurants, tour meeting points, and near the waterfall. Do not leave phones or packs alone while you swim. After dark, stay on bright central streets, or take a registered taxi if your place is outside town on a quiet road. If you have a rental car, do not leave anything visible inside. The usual issue here is theft by distraction, not serious trouble on the street.
