Sámara

Beginners learn to surf on small waves in a wide, protected bay. Between palm trees and simple houses, the small town of Sámara stretches along the curve of this sandy beach. A coral reef offshore keeps the water fairly calm, so swimming and paddleboarding stay easy. Along the main road, surf schools stand beside cafés and markets, all a short walk from the shore. The town has a slow rhythm, with warm evenings and long quiet stretches of sand. Nearby Playa Carrillo offers another curve of pale sand and high palms, often visited as a calm half‑day escape. Small kayaks leave the sand and cross the gentle waves to tiny Isla Chora for snorkeling with colorful fish on rocky reefs.

Playa Carrillo beach day$
When Sámara beach feels a little too busy, Carrillo is an easy escape. It is calmer and quieter, and it is great for swimming, reading under palms, and relaxing for a full afternoon. You do not need a tour. Just go by bus, bike, taxi, or scooter if local roads are okay for you.
Kayak and snorkel trip to Isla Chora$$
This is the classic half-day trip from Sámara. Paddle across the bay, snorkel around Isla Chora, and then relax on the white-sand beach. It is easy to arrange from town, and many tours include gear plus fruit or drinks. Book ahead in high season because it fills up fast.
Werner Sauter Biological Reserve guided hike$$
This is the best choice if a beach day starts to feel too quiet. This dry-forest hike gives you a real chance to see monkeys, birds, and coatis. It also has wide views over the coast. Go early or in the late afternoon. Bring water, and wear shoes with good grip because the heat rises fast.

This is a good evening plan in season, especially if you only have a couple of nights in town. Tours go to nearby nesting beaches to look for olive ridleys, and sometimes hatchlings. Expect strict conservation rules, low light, and a guide who keeps everyone moving quietly.

Things to try

Gallo pinto
This is the everyday Costa Rican breakfast you should try at least once here. Rice and beans sound simple, but with eggs, plantains, and coffee, it becomes a real meal before surfing, kayaking, or a long beach walk.
Casado
This is the standard lunch plate, usually with rice, beans, salad, plantains, and a protein. It is ideal for backpacker budgets because it is filling, local, and easy to find in the simple sodas around town.
Ceviche
This is a good choice on the coast, especially in the hottest part of the day. In Sámara, local places often make simple fish ceviche. It works well as a lighter lunch with patacones on the side.

Playa Barrigona$
This is the beach for people who want to hide away for a few hours. It is quieter than the usual Sámara side trips, with white sand and much less traffic. The downside is access. The road is rough, not clearly marked in some places, and much easier in dry season with a high-clearance vehicle. The reward is great, though the trip can be a little annoying. It is very worth it if you already have transport sorted.
Playa Buena Vista$
This is a good choice for long empty walks, darker sand, and a sunset with fewer people. It suits travelers who want quiet without taking on the rougher access to Barrigona. It is best with a car or an arranged ride, because people do not come here for the public transport.
Bélen Waterfall$$
This is more a local swimming-hole detour than a big waterfall trip, and that is why it works well. The walk in is short, the place is good for cooling off, and it fits well into a half-day outside town. It is best in dry season. During heavy rain, currents can become dangerous, so skip it if the weather looks unsettled.

Practicalities

Sunset is the main social time here. People leave the beach salty and a little sunburned, get a drink, and enjoy a calm night. There is live music, casual bars, and easy talk, not a huge party. The crowd is mixed, with backpackers, couples, families, and some remote workers. So it feels social, but not like a nonstop hostel scene. Sámara is good for slow mornings, surf lessons, and meeting people in a natural way. If you want a big party scene, this town gets quiet early.

Skip Sámara if you want big nightlife, very cheap Costa Rica, or very reliable internet for long workdays. This is a calm surf-and-swim town. It is not a wild backpacker place, and it is not super cheap either. Some travelers also think it feels a little polished compared with rougher beach stops in the region. If your trip is short and you want volcanoes, cloud forest, or intense wildlife, other places are better choices. Sámara is best when you want to slow down and follow the beach pace.

Most people get to Sámara through Liberia. Then they finish the trip by shared shuttle. Interbus and Caribe Shuttle are two common companies to check. Seats are usually around ₡25,000 to ₡35,000. Travel time is roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on pickups. It is pretty easy to book online, but departures are limited. So planning in the dry season helps. A cheaper option is the public bus through Nicoya. Fares are usually under ₡6,000, but it is slower, less direct, and a bit annoying with luggage.

The heat changes very little here. Expect beach weather during most of the year, with daytime highs around 30°C to 33°C. January through April is the easiest sunny period, especially February and March. But crowds and prices go up around Christmas, New Year, and Easter. May, June, and November are a good middle choice. The hills are greener, there are fewer people, and rain often comes later in the day. September and October are the hardest months for a beach trip. Rain is heavier, roads are muddier, and plans get disrupted more often.

It is fairly easy to get cash in town, but do not wait until late night. Banco Nacional and BCR both have ATMs in Sámara. The machines are generally unavailable from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. Wi-Fi is good enough for normal travel, but some travelers still find weak internet. So remote work can become unreliable. Bring a SIM or eSIM backup. Keep a power bank charged. Also ask your stay about water outages. On Sundays, services and bookings can feel even slower.

Petty theft is the main problem here, not a dramatic crime story. On Playa Sámara, the usual mistake is leaving your phone, bag, or wallet on the sand while you swim. This is especially common around sunset, when people feel relaxed and stop paying attention. Stay in lit, busier places at night. Avoid isolated parts of the beach after dark. Use normal beach-town common sense everywhere. Carry only what you need. Lock up valuables. Do not think a quiet place means nobody is watching.
