Cozumel feels calm, touristy, and quite easy to manage. San Miguel has most of the action, with cafés, dive shops, bars, and a mix of locals, expats, cruise passengers, and travelers in transit. After the day visitors leave, the island becomes quiet very quickly. This is not a major backpacker party place. It can feel limited if you do not like snorkeling or diving. It is better for calm days, early mornings, and quiet evenings than for big nights out.

Do not choose Cozumel if you want a strong local city feeling, a big hostel party scene, or lots of variety without going into the water. The island is shaped a lot by tourism, and if you do not enjoy diving or snorkeling, you may get bored faster than you expect. The beaches are better for getting to the reef than for long, lazy beach days. Cruise traffic can also make parts of town feel packaged. It works best for a day trip or a short stay. If calm water, easy transport, and simple island life sound good, you will likely enjoy it.

Most people arrive on the Ultramar ferry from Playa del Carmen. Boats leave often, the trip takes about 40 to 45 minutes, and a normal one-way ticket is usually around 320 MXN. The pier is an easy walk from the ADO terminal in Playa. If you come from Cancún or another place on the Riviera Maya, the cheapest way is usually a bus or colectivo to Playa, then the ferry. The main problems are rough seas, schedule changes in bad weather, and busy terminals at crowded times.

Late winter and spring are the best time to go. February through April usually has the driest and most dependable weather, great water conditions, and fewer weather problems for ferries and boat trips. December and January are also nice, but more crowded. May through August is hotter, more humid, and rainier, though short showers often end quickly. September and October are the hardest months, with the most rain and the highest hurricane risk. June through November can cause transport problems. One good point is that Cozumel sometimes has less sargassum than beaches on the mainland.

In Cozumel, people use both cash and cards, but cash is often better for small places, taxis, and beach spots. Use bank ATMs like Santander or Banamex, and avoid random machines near the ferry if you can. Internet is usually good in San Miguel and in decent apartments, but outages happen sometimes, especially after rain. Telcel is the safest choice for mobile service, and the signal is weaker on the east side. Ask your accommodation separately about power backup and internet backup. Drink purified or bottled water, not tap water.

Cozumel is one of the easier places in Mexico and often feels safe, but that does not mean you should stop being careful. In San Miguel and near the ferry area, watch your phone, bag, and cash, especially in tight crowds. Late at night, use normal care on quieter streets. For many travelers, the biggest real danger is the scooter, not crime. Roads on the east side can feel empty, windy, and very hot, so wear a helmet, do not ride at night, and take photos of the rental before you return it. Strong sun and currents also cause problems for people.
