In the day, Sayulita feels like a small surf town. People seem to be going to a lesson, a smoothie place, or the beach. At night, it becomes a true party town. The streets get loud, the bars get full, and it is easy to meet people quickly. Many visitors are backpackers, surfers, digital nomads, and short-stay vacationers. You also hear a lot of English. If San Pancho is the calmer neighbor, Sayulita is the louder sister or brother who plays music too late.

Some travelers should skip Sayulita, or at least stay only a short time. Do not choose it if you want a quiet fishing village, very cheap Mexico, reliable work-from-anywhere infrastructure, or a very clean town beach for long swims. Light sleepers also have a hard time here. Street noise, music, and nightlife are part of the experience. San Pancho is better for a calmer trip. Sayulita is best if you want easy surfing and fast social energy, and you do not mind a place that feels polished, popular, and a little untidy.

Most people arrive from Puerto Vallarta Airport. Then they take the white-and-green Compostela-Pacifico bus marked Sayulita. This is the cheapest choice, usually around 55 to 70 pesos. The ride takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic. There is no real booking problem. You just cross the pedestrian bridge or walk to the side bus stop and wait. Uber is also possible, usually around 450 to 550 pesos. But airport pickup can be awkward, and some drivers cancel because they do not want the longer ride.

Dry season, November through April, is best for most people. Days are warm, around 28°C, beach time is easier, and streets are less muddy. December to March is the busiest period, so the town feels more crowded and accommodation can get tight. May can still be a good choice if you want heat without peak-season traffic. June through October brings humidity, afternoon rain, and a more sticky feeling overall. September is usually the hardest month for rain, slippery jungle trails, and plans that change quickly.

Cash is still helpful here, and ATMs can run low during busy weeks. So do not depend on only one machine. ATMs linked to banks are a safer choice, especially the Intercam or Kapital Bank one on Calle Revolución. Do not drink tap water. Internet is a bigger problem. Some places have strong fiber, but others work badly. Townwide outages can stop power, water, cell service, and Wi-Fi at the same time. If remote work is important, book a place with backup internet, bring a power bank, and read noise reviews carefully.

The main risks here are quite specific. The town usually feels comfortable, but nights can get more wild, so use normal party-town caution and do not leave valuables on the beach. The surf beach can have strong currents. Water quality at the main beach is still the big concern, especially after heavy rain, so check the flags and ask local people before you swim. For Monkey Mountain, start early and strongly think about getting a guide. Some people have gotten lost after dark and found aggressive animals on the route.
