Life here follows the sun, the sand, and the time your 4x4 leaves. Barreirinhas is the main base and the most practical choice. It is a bit busy and a bit touristy. It has agencies, tables by the river, and some live music at night. Atins feels more relaxed and more interesting. It is part fishing village and part beach base, with a slower crowd. Santo Amaro is even quieter. There is some social life, but this is not a party place. People come back dusty, tired from the sun, and strangely happy.

If you want easy transport, reliable internet, and lots of independent exploring, this place may test your patience. The best experience depends on the season. So coming in the wrong months can mean dry lagoons and lots of sand without the reward. Barreirinhas can feel crowded and a bit focused on package tours, especially around Lagoa Bonita at sunset. Skip it if you want nightlife or city energy. Go if a few inconvenient details are worth a landscape that truly feels different.

Most people arrive through São Luís, then take the Cisne Branco bus to Barreirinhas. The trip takes around 4.5 to 5 hours and usually costs about R$90. Shared shuttles cost more, but they make things easier, especially from the airport. There is also a small Azul regional flight to Barreirinhas. But seats are limited and flights do not run often. To continue to Atins, the usual choice is a voadeira on the Rio Preguiças. It takes about 1.5 hours and costs roughly R$60. The frustrating part is that online booking can be difficult. So local agencies and WhatsApp still handle much of the real booking work.

Rain creates everything important here. January to June is the wet season. The heaviest rain is usually in March and April, and this water fills the lagoons. June to September is the best time, especially July and August. Then the lagoons are full and the skies are usually better. Early June can also be excellent. September has fewer people, but water levels start to drop. October to December is the weakest time for the classic lagoon views. Brazilian holiday periods also make crowds and prices rise quickly.

Barreirinhas is the easiest place for planning, so arrange cash and bookings there before going to the sandier bases. Atins needs more attention. There is no ATM backup, card use is uneven, and small costs are still often cash, though PIX helps in some places. Wi-Fi is weaker after you leave Barreirinhas, and mobile data can stop working. Bring a power bank, more water than you expect, and strong sun protection. People often book tours locally, and Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita are usually sold separately.

The main risk here is nature, not a stressful city setting. Sun, heat, and light from the white sand can ruin a day quickly. So carry water, use strong sunscreen, and do not underestimate dune walking at 32°C. Inside the park, stay with guides and authorized 4x4 drivers. Driving yourself over the dunes is restricted for good reason. In Barreirinhas, use normal Brazil street caution after dark. Arrive in daylight if possible, and keep phones out of sight during transfers and riverfront evenings.
