Compared with many Brazilian beach towns, Paraty feels calmer than usual. Mornings begin slowly. Nights are social, but they do not become wild. You see couples, backpackers, Brazilian weekend visitors, and families, especially on holidays. Carnival here feels more family-friendly than chaotic. The old town adds style, but the real feeling is simple and outdoorsy. People plan boat trips, waterfall trips, and maybe a drink later. If Rio feels too intense, Paraty feels like a deep breath out.

Do not choose Paraty if you want a nonstop party town, long beach days right outside your hotel, or a place where every plan runs on a tight schedule. The town itself is small. Many of the best nature trips need boats, local buses, or good weather. Summer rain can really ruin the flow of the trip. It is also not a good choice for people with serious mobility problems. Those old stones are uneven even before the water comes. But for a slower part of a Brazil trip, it works very well.

Most people arrive by bus on the Rio to São Paulo route. From Rio, Costa Verde goes from Novo Rio to Paraty in about 4 to 5 hours, usually around R$90-140. From São Paulo, Reunidas Paulista is the usual company. The trip is closer to 6 hours and often around R$110-170. There is no useful airport in town, so going by road is the main option. Booking is easy on normal weekdays. It gets annoying on holidays, Carnival, and long weekends, when seats sell out fast.

June to August is the best time to go. Days are still warm, roughly 23°C to 25°C, and there is less rain. That makes boat trips, trails, and walking around town feel much safer for planning. April, May, September, and October are also good shoulder months. They often have fewer people and decent weather. January to March is a risky wet period. It is hotter at around 28°C, humid, and known for heavy rain that can disrupt roads and beach plans. Carnival is busier, and FLIP brings larger crowds, fewer rooms, and higher prices.

In Paraty town, cards are accepted enough for normal travel. But keep cash for buses, beach kiosks, and anything involving Trindade, where ATM access is not reliable. Wi-Fi in town is usually good enough for bookings and light work. It gets weaker when you go farther down the coast. Bring a Type N adapter. Ask your accommodation about filtered water instead of thinking the tap water is okay. One hidden comfort problem is the old center itself. The cobblestones, puddles, and occasional tidal flooding make weak sandals annoying very quickly.

Paraty is one of the easier places to arrive in Brazil. The historic center is usually busy, easy to walk around, and much calmer than Rio, especially at night. Still, use normal backpacker common sense. Carry only a few valuables. Do not wave your phone around on quieter streets. Ask local people which dark edges to avoid when you walk back late. The bigger problems here are often not crime, but mosquitoes, slippery stones, and rain. Bring repellent during dengue season, and walk carefully when the old town floods at high tide.
