Mornings feel like a city focused on work. Sidewalks are fast, people grab coffee, and everyone seems to be going somewhere. In the late afternoon, things feel more relaxed. This is clear in Pinheiros and Vila Madalena, where bars get busy and the streets get louder. Sundays on Paulista and weekends in Ibirapuera show a gentler side. You see vendors, music, and people staying out for hours. It feels social, but not like a backpacker bubble. Some travellers think it feels cold or too focused on business. Others love the strong big-city energy.

Do not choose São Paulo if you want postcard Brazil, simple beach time, or a small old town you can see on foot. This city is very large, gray in some areas, steep, and sometimes tiring. It also needs more street awareness than a smaller backpacker destination. Some travellers leave saying it feels dull, especially in cold or rainy weather. But if you like food, neighborhoods, museums, street art, and late-night city energy, skipping it often means missing the Brazil that suits you most.

GRU airport is the main place most people arrive. A common budget option is the official EMTU/GRU Airport bus. Line 258 to Barra Funda costs R$46.55 and takes about 1h05 when traffic is light. After that, the metro costs R$5.40. Suburban line 257 to Tatuapé is another option if you are okay with one transfer. Late at night, many people take Uber straight to their accommodation. The main problem is traffic, which can be very bad. Foreign cards also sometimes do not work on transit machines, so carry a little cash.

June to August is the best time if you enjoy walking in cities. Days are usually drier, and mornings can fall close to 10°C. Winter in São Paulo often feels colder inside because many buildings do not have heating. April to May and September are also good shoulder-season choices. But September can still be cold and rainy. From December to March, expect heat, strong rain, flooding, and bad traffic. Because of that, airport transfers can become difficult. Sundays are excellent for Avenida Paulista. But in other neighborhoods, some places close or open at unusual hours.

You can pay by card in almost all places. Still, it is useful to keep R$20-50 for metro tickets, buses, or the occasional machine that does not accept foreign cards. Banco24Horas ATMs are common in malls, convenience stores, and bank branches. Do not deal with the SIM card problem unless you have a CPF. An eSIM like Airalo is much easier. Wi-Fi is usually reliable in apartments, cafes, and coworking spaces. If you work online, check the speed first. Expect steep hills, 110/127V plugs, and a slower pace on Sundays in some neighborhoods.

Phone theft is the biggest problem here. This is especially true for quick thefts by people on bikes. Do not walk while holding your phone. Be extra careful when you stop for photos at Beco do Batman, on Avenida Paulista, or near busy transit exits. Centro needs more care, and Cracolândia is a place to avoid even during the day. Vila Madalena, Pinheiros, Jardins, and Itaim usually feel easier for visitors. Even there, keep the same careful habits. For nightlife, choose beer, wine, or factory-sealed liquor. Avoid very cheap spirits that seem suspicious.
