Destination guide
Pilgrims walk clockwise around white stupas as pigeons burst up from crowded brick squares. Between these sacred spaces and busy markets, the Kathmandu Valley keeps history in its three towns. Brick squares like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan, and Bhaktapur show temples, stone lions, and carved windows. Inside quiet courtyards, prayer wheels spin beside shrines, with incense smoke in the air. You explore rooftops and tiny alleys and find street snacks, Buddhist stupas, and hidden Hindu shrines sharing the small courtyard. Short walks to hills like Nagarkot and Shivapuri show rice terraces and wide views back over the crowded valley. At Boudhanath in the evening, you walk the kora with locals around the huge white stupa under rows of butter lamps.

At a glance
Expect busy Kathmandu for gear and street food, gentler Patan for courtyards, and quiet Bhaktapur for old brick lanes, with trek planning everywhere.
Plan 3 to 6 nights, enough for the three towns, Boudhanath evenings, and maybe one hill day.
Skip it if traffic, dust, noise, cold winter mornings, or monsoon delays ruin the mood, or if temple fatigue hits after two days.
