Destination guide
In Upper Mustang, treks cross a high, dry valley between carved red cliffs and small mud-brick villages. The land lies north of Himalayan peaks, so little rain falls and the hills stay dry. Village monasteries above the fields have low rooms, thick stone walls, and bright red and gold paintings. Villages sit far from each other, so walking days are long and travel here stays slow and steady. Strong winds sometimes carry dust across the valley, which can make paths tiring and eyes feel dry. At the northern end of Upper Mustang, the walled town of Lo Manthang rises from the dusty plain. Inside its earthen walls, walking narrow lanes between white houses and old monasteries gives a close picture of Upper Mustang.

At a glance
Quiet, dusty, and slow, with prayer walls, tea breaks, wind in the afternoons, and calm nights where trekkers trade stories in simple teahouses.
Give it 6 to 10 nights, enough for the long approach, slow pace, and time around Lo Manthang.
Skip it for a cheap, easy, social Nepal trip, or if permits, basic rooms, weather delays, altitude, and little nightlife sound annoying.
