Destination guide
From the wooden boardwalk at Cloud 9, powerful waves on Siargao carry surfers over a shallow reef. A simple wooden tower, surf shacks, and many boards on the sand make Cloud 9 the island's main gathering place for surfing. Surf schools along nearby beaches teach beginners on gentler waves, with instructors often shouting clear, sometimes very loud, tips over the water. Away from Cloud 9, narrow concrete roads pass through tall coconut forests, quiet villages, and small roadside stores. At Magpupungko, low tide reveals deep natural rock pools where swimmers float above sharp reef in bright blue water. North of the main town, Sugba Lagoon sits between limestone hills, where outriggers glide over still green water and steep walls rise close around swimmers.

Plan 4 to 7 nights, enough for surf days, lagoon trips, road rides, and one or two weather backups.
Skip it if you need fixed schedules, strong hospitals, steady power, or reliable cash and internet. Most backpackers should still go here.
