Destination guide
Chiang Rai shines with the white glow of Wat Rong Khun, a temple covered in mirrored glass. Inside, murals and detailed sculptures show Buddhist stories beside heroes and machines from famous movies and comics. Across town, Baan Dam Museum's wooden buildings display doors, animal bones, and heavy furniture made by artist Thawan Duchanee. In the evening, the night bazaar fills with stalls and music coming from the small stage. Simple guesthouses and bars around the clock tower help keep the pace of days slow and easy. Chiang Rai often serves as a base for trips to waterfalls, caves, and small hill villages nearby. Many visits finish at Wat Rong Suea Ten, where blue walls surround statues and painted nagas in the hall.

Less busy than Chiang Mai, with easy cafes, temple stops, quiet mornings, and a gentle base-town mood for hills, waterfalls, and border roads.
2 to 3 nights works well for town sights, night bazaar, and one or two nearby day trips.
Skip it if you want walkable city action, strong nightlife, or burning-season mountain views. With one spare day, Chiang Mai may be easier.
